My name is Hugh MacDonald and I am honoured to have been asked by the Reunion’s Organizing Committee to welcome you to this reception, the first of two events planned to celebrate the Reunion.
Tonight is a Meet and Greet occasion mostly about walking down Memory Lane with our classmates.
Our graduating year had plenty happening that really put 1963-64 uniquely in the history books.
A few to recall include the introduction of the Beatles to North America, along with the introduction of the mini-skirt and Ford Mustang to the world. The number one hits were Bob Dylan’s Blowing in the Wind in 63 and Really Got a Hold on Me by Smokey Robinson in 64.
What did we have in 64?
A few now and thens were:
In 1964 we didn’t have gas at $1.38 a litre we had gas at 42 cents a gallon.
We didn’t have cell phones – We had pay phones
We didn’t have laptops – We had typewriters
We didn’t have the Prius – We had the Mustang
We didn’t have 7-11 – We had the corner store
We didn’t have the Times Colonist – We had the Times AND the Colonist
We didn’t have a Swat Team – We had Sergeant Green
We didn’t have sushi – We had teenburgers
We didn’t have global warming – We had hot days and bikinis at Willows Beach
We didn’t have Hip-Hop – We had the Beatles
They were the Good Old Days, when we weren’t so Good because we weren’t so Old.
I would now like to introduce and thank the group who put this reunion together.
The Committee who have been meeting regularly for the past year and a half.
It was in November 2012 that I received a call from Barry Gray asking if I would like to join this group and attend the first meeting in December. Barry put this first meeting together and invited who he knew would make this Celebration happen. It was at this meeting that we very fortunately found Barbara (Hughes) Hendel in attendance and immediately elected Barbara as our Chair.
Please recognize the members of Barb’s Committee – Barbara (McKellar) Bulman-Flemming, Erin (McMartin) Chard, Maureen (Usheer) Godwin, Barry Gray, Julie (Stevens) Hall, Barbara (Hughes) Hendel, Sue (Ptak) Hope, Rick Humber, Linda (McClung) Monteski, Wendy (Lovitt) Warren and Richard (Rick) Fraser.
Thank you all for making this evening and tomorrow’s Dinner Celebration happen for us.
Wendy Lovitt Warren has a special presentation to make to recognize Barb’s outstanding leadership:
Barb has also ask that we let you know there is an open position on the Committee for a web site master so if anyone has an interest and is willing to help out please let her know.
I will now ask Rick Humber to acknowledge some special guests with us – former teachers:
There is lots to reminisce about tonight and a lot more at Dinner tomorrow so let’s get at it.
